The chlorovinyls segment consists of a highly integrated chain of products that include electrovinyl products, compound products and chlorine-based products. Axiall is North America's 3rd largest producer of chlor-alkali and 2nd largest producer of vinyl chloride monomer.
Caustic soda is a co-product of the chlorine manufacturing
process. An essential ingredient in a variety of
industrial applications, caustic soda is used in the manufacturing of pulp and
paper, soap and detergent, textiles, aluminum and petrochemical refining.
Chlorine is a naturally-occurring element; however it is found
rarely in nature. Chlorine is produced by passing an electric current through
salt water, or brine. Well known for its disinfecting ability, chlorine is an
essential reagent in the chemical industry and serves as a building block in
thousands of products.
Ethyl chloride serves as a base or intermediate in
various coatings, films, plastics and gasoline additives. Liquid ethyl chloride
is available for shipment in tank trucks, tank cars and ships.
Ethylene dichloride (EDC) is used primarily in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). It is produced by reacting chlorine with ethylene. Axiall uses nearly all of the EDC that we produce in our production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). While its primary use is in the production of PVC, EDC can also be used as a solvent, fumigant, degreaser, or paint remover, and as an intermediate for the production of other organic compounds.
Axiall is one of a relatively small number of manufacturers of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). We manufacture VCM by heating ethylene dichloride (EDC) in the presence of oxygen. The most important use of VCM worldwide is its polymerization to produce polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or plastics.
Vinyl is among the most widely used plastics in the world today, and we supply a broad portfolio of vinyl resins to a wide range of end-use markets. The majority of our vinyl resins are sold to customers to formulate vinyl compounds, which are then heated and shaped using various extrusion and molding processes to create finished products. These products include vinyl pipe and pipe fittings, wire and cable coatings, home siding and windows, electrical wall boxes and apparatus, fencing, home and office furnishings, consumer products, packaging and containers.
Axiall engineers and manufactures rigid and flexible vinyl compounds. Our rigid vinyl compounds are used in a wide range of applications and production processes. Our injection molding compounds are used in the production of computer housings and keyboards, electrical outlet boxes and pipe fittings. Our extrusion compounds are used in window and furniture profiles and sheets for household fixtures and decorative overlays. Our blow molding compounds are primarily used for both food-grade and general purpose bottles used to package cosmetics, shampoos, charcoal lighter fluid, water and edible oils. Our flexible vinyl compounds are used in wire and cable insulation and jacketing, automotive window encapsulation, custom profiles, automotive trim and body side molding, and flexible tubing.
In our Solucor product line, we offer customers a high-quality line of additives for rigid PVC applications, focusing on a broad mix of process aids, impact modifiers, lubricants and stabilizers. Solucor additives have a solid track record of successful performance in their targeted applications dating back to their inception in 1994. Today, these additives are widely used in downstream Axiall operations, as well as those of other commercial customers.
Axiall manufactures a range of solvents used for a variety of applications including degreasing and cleaning electronics and certain metals. Axiall’s solvents also are used by dry cleaning plants, as a fluorocarbon feedstock and by the petroleum refining industry for catalyst regeneration.
Axiall produces calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) for a range of water treatment applications including swimming pools, drinking water, wastewater, safety and irrigation. Axiall's Accu-Tab® chlorination system combines patented erosion feeder chlorinator technology with proprietary cal-hypo tablets, offering a simple and effective chlorination solution. Available in a range of sizes that are capable of chlorinating hundreds to millions of gallons of water a day, the custom-manufactured chlorinators are ideal for a wide variety of aquatic and industrial applications.
Muriatic acid is used in chemicals and pharmaceutical production, food processing, steel pickeling and natural gas and oil production. Axiall produces a high-quality burner grade muriatic acid that is available in tank trucks and tank cars.
On April 7, 2015, Axiall Corp. sold its Specialty Phosgene Derivatives business to ALTIVIA; the unit is now part of ALTIVIA Specialty Chemicals. Offering acid chlorides, chloroformates and custom-made phosgene derivative chemicals for more than three decades, this unit has earned a global reputation for meeting the demands of the world's leading chemical and pharmaceutical companies. These phosgene derivatives are used in the polymer, pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals industries.
